Meet our new intern!

At The Indispensary, we have been working with interns for over 3 years, and this month we are very excited to welcome Ella to the team.  We’ve asked Ella to introduce herself, and share with you why she was looking for an internship and what she hopes to get out of it.

Starting a new internship comes with a mixture of curiosity, excitement, and nerves – but above all, I am thrilled to be joining the team here at the Indispensary. My name is Ella, a new addition here as a Business and Marketing Intern! I am currently entering my final year of study at the University of Exeter, where I am studying English and Communications. My time at university has solidified my passion for social justice, and the way digital content and storytelling can inspire growth, spark conversations and drive positive change – principles I believe are just as important in charity development as they have been in my studies.

Why Choose The Indispensary?

I was really drawn to The Indispensary because of its dedication to empowering and supporting charity leaders. At the same time, I was curious: I was unfamiliar with what a virtual assistance company was. As I approach graduation, I want to explore different career paths, and The Indispensary’s mission to help charities thrive resonated with me as a great place to learn and grow! This internship grants me the chance to see how a company operates behind the scenes, whilst also developing my own skills in digital content creation, client communications, and marketing strategy.

My Background

Prior to joining the team, I was fortunate to work on a variety of projects within the charity sector, that deepened my interest in combining social impact with creative media. In my first year at university, I was the project manager for an award-winning social justice campaign, named ‘Bodies Beyond Politics’, which advocated for women healthcare. That project gave me hands-on experience in public engagement, technical skills, and—most importantly—the power of collaboration.

At Exeter City Community Trust, I interned as a charity development assistant, where I produced a promotional video for a major fundraising event. The role involved planning, filming, editing, and working with a wide range of stakeholders to bring the project together. On top of this, I volunteered with Nightline, a student led, confidential support service, later becoming their publicity officer and creating content reflecting the charities mission of inclusivity and support. These roles strengthened my motivation to pursue a career where social impact and marketing intersect.

Alongside this, I have enjoyed working in the marketing and branding team of Exeter’s Student Guild, where I now lead the student content creator team, where I manage campaigns that connect with the student community. Furthermore, I’ve also written for platforms such as Her Campus and Razz Magazine, covering everything from current affairs and social taboos to student creativity. These opportunities have reinforced my belief in the power of creative media to inspire action—something I’m excited to bring into this role!

Looking Ahead

Already, I have felt so welcomed by Joanne and the rest of the team. Through this internship, I am hoping to refine my digital marketing skills, explore tools like Mailer Lite, and see how technologies such as AI—often discouraged in education—are applied in a professional setting. I am particularly excited to gain experience in outreach and help shape the engaging content that supports The Indispensary’s clients.

Whilst this is only the beginning, I am already confident that this internship is going to be a brilliant chance to learn, contribute, and connect – I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
